The Carnation Revolution Today!
Popular Celebration
The Rebellion of the April Captains, which in less than 24 hours toppled Europe’s longest fascist dictatorship and a decaying empire of more than three centuries of oppression, offered the Portuguese people their boldest political practices of direct participation. These practices were embodied in a plurality of popular, peaceful, and non-partisan movements responsible for building a new society.
Defying the first sentence of the first communiqué issued by the April Captains, a sea of people—including children—flooded the streets by the thousands and began to write their own history in a markedly progressive, self-managed, and almost always peaceful chorus.
In light of the general collapse of ways of life under the Capitalocene and the degradation of representative democracies, the Carnation Revolution indeed seems like a utopia - a legacy that showed how political equality and the pursuit of social justice are human creations, born when people act politically upon their own lives.
‘Wake up, wake up, lightning and typhoons that sleep in the air and in the crowds, come and set on fire the rocks of the sea, the world and hearts with the stars and your songs’.
