Your Guide Mal (they/them or none) will tour you through 1 of 3 neighborhoods with queer and critical history.
Mal has been guiding for 20 years and is deeply embedded in the nightlife and political communities of Berlin, including producing content for LSVD MILES and numerous queer and feminist orgs visiting or in the city. Upsi (she/her) works as an assistant-person and helps to facilitate organisation. We will always end somewhere with food, bars/clubs, and public transportation. We are hosted by the locally-owned, queer-run, and hetero-friendly Art Hotel Connection that are helping to sponsor us and support a more sustainable and critical form of travel and queer community. Sometimes hotel guests will join us on the tour, but are asked to contribute more. Our tours are meant for everyone who loves queer people!
Language:
In EN/DE. We will do single or dual-language depending on participation.
Place:
*In front of the Art Hotel Connection in Schöneberg!*
Possible tours depending on pay and participation:
1. „Gay and Sapphic Schöneberg“ (min. 2 hours) This tour covers Lotte Hahm who founded Germany’s first trans club in the 20s, the friendship and works of Erika Mann and Isherwood along with numerous other artists, as well as how the NS regime changed everything overnight.
2. „Queer Kreuzberg“ (min. 3 hours) This one dives into the post-war period in Kreuzberg, queer refugees, migrants, and outsiders like Audre Lorde, Blixa Bargeld, and Rio Reiser. We will see Berlin’s most famous squat used as a queer refugium and for political organising. The street art in this quarter is a highlight too.
3. „Radical Prenzlauerberg“ (min. 3.5 hours) Prenzlauerberg is known as a gentrified quarter. However, we will look for the radical contemporary that still exists. How resistances forged by alliances between punks and the church or Quakers and Jews set the foundations for the Tuntenhaus project. And, Where a blind and deaf anarchist saved people from the Nazis and a policeman saved a Synagoge from the SS and NS-Fanatics.
