The plot of the film by Schlöndorff/von Trotta, or rather the novel by Heinrich Böll, addresses the current issues surrounding the hysterical and polemical terrorism debate (e.g., the "Baader-Meinhof Gang") of the early 1970s: the entanglement of state institutions with private economic power; the possibilities of manipulating high-circulation tabloid newspapers (BILD) in the service of political restoration; and the powerlessness of the individual in the face of public opinion fueled to mass hysteria.
