The eccentric Brian Sweeney Fitzcarraldo is obsessed with the idea of building a large opera house in the middle of the pristine Amazon jungle. From the savings of his girlfriend, the brothel owner Molly, Fitzcarraldo buys an old river steamer. With it he wants to sail into an undeveloped rubber area to generate the money for the construction of the opera house. Indigenous people help him to advance his rubber trade.
And to pull a ship over a hill...
