Join us at Offline for a Saturday afternoon of shared learning and critical reflection on the ubiquity of smartphones. Sure they can be super useful, but how did the unspoken obligation to own one to function in society emerge? And what needs to change so that we have the option to detach from these digital torture machines?

About the presenters

HYNEK TROJÁNEK works for the Czech organization IuRe (Iuridicum Remedium), which since 2001 focuses primarily on privacy protection and digital rights. However, IuRe also covers issues of "digital exclusion" and "the right to analog". And it is precisely his experiences with digital exclusion that he will be talking about: Hynek still primarily uses a "dumb phone". What is his experience? How does he manage not to fall out of society? How have the problems of dumb phone owners changed in recent years?"

IRMA MASTENBROEK is a techno-feminist, digital rights activist, and AI ethics expert. With a background in mathematics, she has been developing a formal logic of Girl Math: to mathematically prove that the girls are right. Across technology, philosophy, law, and research, Irma is driven by the mission to break free from the tech-bro doctrine, and tries to imagine alternatives.

ROBERTA BARONE is an AI ethics and compliance expert for AI systems in recruitment, an advisor on AI’s environmental impact, and a lecturer on the topic of fairness in recruitment algorithms. In Berlin, she cofounded Collective Drift, a space for critical exploration of issues related to technology and society. In November 2024, she ditched her smartphone.
