Revolution&Political Power: Lessons from Sudan, Egypt & Iran

🔴 Revolution and Political Power: Lessons from Sudan, Egypt and Iran
Speakers: Marwan Osman from Sudan Uprising Organization
Omnia from Egypt Solidarity Movement
Leila from Slingers Collective (Manjanigh)

In this session, we will explore the pivotal moments in Iran (1979), Egypt (2011), and Sudan (2018), when, amid and as a result of mass popular uprisings, the authoritarian regimes of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, Hosni Mubarak, and Omar al-Bashir collapsed. Yet, through trajectories marked by notable differences and striking parallels, the forces of “counterrevolution” ultimately succeeded in consolidating political power.
We will ask why communists and revolutionary leftists either could not or did not seek to seize political power, and through this inquiry illuminate the real nature of the struggle between revolution and counterrevolution. Drawing on the experiences of Iran, Egypt, and Sudan, we will also engage with the broader question of “revolution and political power”, a question that, in recent decades, has become a central crisis for the communist movement on one side, and for the many unfinished or defeated revolutions on the other.

As part of the event, we will also collect donations in support of emergency rooms in Sudan, specifically the Tawila emergency room in Darfur. Further details will be shared during the session.
