This week at Cantina Communal, we’re sharing SHINJUKU BOYS (1995) — an intimate, tender, and powerful documentary following three transgender hosts working in Tokyo’s Shinjuku nightlife district.

Filmed with care and closeness, the film offers a rare glimpse into chosen family, gender, labor, love, and survival — without spectacle, without pity, without explanation for outsiders. Just people living their lives on their own terms. A quiet classic. Still radical. Still relevant.
