The situation of stray dogs in Egypt is extremely harsh and problematic. They are part of everyday street life in almost all cities and villages and are mostly descendants of abandoned pets; some have already been born on the streets for generations. The dogs often suffer from hunger, disease, and injuries. Veterinary care is rarely available, vaccinations are almost completely absent, and many animals are affected by infections and parasites. The situation is particularly severe for puppies, most of whom do not survive the first months of life and often die in great suffering. Out of fear of diseases, rejection, and sometimes indifference, dogs are frequently chased away, abused, or killed. Time and again, there have also been government-ordered killing campaigns, which have been criticized internationally because they cause immense suffering and do not provide a lasting solution.
In Aswan, the situation for the dogs is especially difficult. Apart from a few individuals, there is no animal welfare system, no shelters, no assistance, and no veterinary care or similar support. In addition, there is a lack of education and governmental backing. Without local animal welfare structures, there is no one who systematically takes responsibility or serves as a point of contact for the public and authorities. Individual committed people do try to help, but they quickly reach their limits due to a lack of funds, infrastructure, and legal support. The proceeds of the solidarity concert will be donated to Animal Care Hurghada Streetwork e.V.
Animal Care Hurghada Streetwork e.V. is an animal welfare organization whose main focus is the spaying/neutering and medical care of stray dogs. They educate the public about how to treat animals, run a small sanctuary, and place animals in loving homes. They also train veterinarians in the sterilization of female dogs. They are fighting an uphill battle and deserve all the support that is possible. Another portion of the funds will be used to enable the neutering of dogs in Gharf Aswan, a Nubian village on the opposite bank of the Nile from the city of Aswan. This will be a first attempt to get the uncontrolled reproduction of dogs in the area under control.
